Abstract: | The Khevenhüller Chronik, a family chronicle from the 17th century in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna, was removed from its binding in 1976 and has been kept unbound since. The sewing was also undone in order to make double-page paintings contained in the book block accessible for various purposes. Although the individual components – binding, book block and paintings – are still fully preserved today, they are stored separately from each other. This state raises the question of whether the components should be reunited or whether the separate storage should be retained. This diploma thesis addresses the aforementioned issue and sheds light on questions of conservation ethics that were carefully considered during the decision-making process. A special emphasis is directed towards the interdisciplinary professional exchange for the definition of a values-based conservation goal. The exploration of the question, "When is a book a book?" was also of significance. A suitable concept of measures was developed, which respects the historically evolved condition and takes all immaterial aspects into account. The conservation concept „Hybrid-Strategy” offers a compromise between storing the components separately and bringing them back together in their historical binding. The implementation of the concept was initiated as part of the diploma thesis. |
