Abstract: | This diploma thesis is about a clarinet case from the “collection of old musical instruments” (Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente) in Vienna from the 19th century. It is the original case of three clarinets made from the famous instrument maker family Uhlmann. The clarinets are also part of the “collection of old musical instruments”. The case is fabricated out of different materials: wood, leather, textile, paper, carton and metal. It is made out of wood, upholstered with velvet and has leather applications. Bevor the conservation measures had been carried out, the clarinet case was in a very fragile state. Especially the leather is strongly degraded, in an extent that the leather fibers are partially hard, brittle and black. Therefore, handling of the clarinet case was not possible without losing leather parts. Hence goal of this thesis was the conservation of the fragile leather on the clarinet case, including cleaning of the soiled surface and stabilizing the brittle material. Since the main focus was the conservation of leather, an excursion about this material group can be found in this thesis. After that, enough knowledge could be gathered to determine the condition of the leather on the clarinet case. The leather showed varying ageing phenomena, thus it was categorized in different grades of degradation. To find suitable methods for the stabilization of the leather a literature research and extensive testing were done, furthermore an information exchange with some national and international leather conservation institutions and freelance leather conservators/restorers was made. |
