Overview:

Abstract: Abstract
The Museum of Hamburg History´s holdings include the Jacob von Döhren silhouette collection from around 1780, a collection of prints and metal sheets used to reproduce silhouettes, an art form that became popular in social circles in the 18th century. The collection is housed in specially made protective cases. In addition to material from von Döhren´s creative period, the collection includes reprints that were printed from the original metal plates onto new paper around 120 years later and are kept together with the originals. The aim of this master´s thesis is to analyze the collection, which has not yet undergone any conservation or restoration work. In addition to gaining a detailed understanding of the materials and techniques used, the focus is on determining the current status quo. In addition, it will be investigated whether the form of preservation meets today´s conservation requirements and which criteria must be met in order to avoid repackaging. Based on the results of the visual examination of the collection, measures to preserve the collection are then recommended.
