Overview:
Abstract: Abstract
A conservation concept for an early modern period limp parchment binding from the Dombibliothek Hildesheim was developed. Its condition was recorded and evaluated.
The object presents a typical damage of its kind, as the front board is fully and the back board partially detached from the binding. To develop a suitable technique with which not only the functionality of the front board but also the parchment lining can be restored, a basic understanding of the material‘s specific demands needed to be set. Afterwards different techniques for the reattachment of book boards and the restauration of the joint area, involving parchment, Japanese paper, and parchment-fibre-paper, were discussed. A fitting method for the object was developed from the techniques dis-cussed. It has not been practically implemented yet.
