Anna Schifer: Painting technique analysis of paintings by Friedrich Carl Gröger Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The subject of this thesis is the technical examination of eight paintings made by the artist Friedrich Carl Gröger. Gröger was a portrait painter who worked in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark and finally in Hamburg in between the 18th and 19th century. The paintings are all part of the collection of the "Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte". The first part of this thesis deals with the aspects of art history and locates Friedrich Carl Gröger with his biography and his work in northern Germany and in Hamburg. All eight paintings depict men and can all be dated - either precisely - by the signature or by the historical context of a few years. The second part describes and documents the investigations and analyses carried out by the author on the eight paintings. So far there have been no studies of this kind and this thesis can only be the beginning of a detailed examination of Gröger as an artist in Hamburg during the period of transition.
