Abstract: A fundamental component in the field of conservation are art technological investigations for analyzing the material-specific composition of cultural objects.
This thesis examines the investigation method of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) using the Laser-based Elemental Analyzer EA-300 by Keyence Corporation. The method for identifying the elemental composition of samples is characterized by its rapid, simple and preparation-free implementation. However, it should be noted that it is a micro-destructive method.
This work aims to investigate the possibilities and limitations in the analysis of historical pigments with the LIBS analysis unit EA-300. A limited elemental analysis for pigment identification is possible. While the detection of heavy metals is reliable, the method reaches its limitations when analyzing light elements. Additionally, the analysis of pigment mixing ratios proves to be unreliable. The differentiation of overlapping paint layers is partially feasible.
In order to fully assess the potential applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy as a complement to existing analytical methods, further detailed analyses with samples that match the originals are necessary.
