Anna-Lena Witt: Gellan Gum vs. "Der Schlürfer" Cleaning of stains in the unvarnished paintings of the Vorderasiatisches Museum Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:
Abstract: The presented thesis focuses on the cleaning challenges of dark stains on the paint surface of the paintings of the Vorderasiatisches Museum Berlin. The piece “Uruk” (VAK 00016) by Elisabeth Andrae will be used as an example.
The aim of this work is to receive a clue on the matter of a possible cleaning concept through empiric cleaning tests. Because of the lack of a protective varnish over the paint layer, two delicate cleaning methods that work without mechanical pressure will be tested. On the one hand the cleaning and the application will be carried out by the use of rigid gels, here gellan gum, and on the other hand the cleaning will be performed with the “Schlürfer” (german for “to slurp”, W. Heiber, 1990). This should provide the responsible restaurator (Dipl. Rest) Holger Manzke with the basis to achieve the cleaning of the stains.
