Overview:

Abstract: This master thesis deals with the technological investigation of the so-called "Elfen- Retabel".
It can be seen today in St Magdalene´s Church in Hildesheim. The wooden retable, which
comes from St Michael´s Church in Hildesheim, is attributed to the sculptor Levin Storch and
is dated between 1520 and 1533.
A combination of literature and source research as well as various examination methods and
analyses on one part of the object make it possible to classify the surface of the retable as
originally not polychromed. The making and reworking of the object can also be traced.
The work with objects contaminated with biocides and microbes is discussed and appropriate
protective measures are taken.
