Abstract: | Subject of this thesis is the technological examination, conservation, and restoration of an early 17th century portrait of Sophie von Henneberg. The painting on canvas is not mounted on a traditional stretcher, but instead aached to the back of its decorative frame. This unusual construction is examined in depth and compared to objects with a similar way of stretching the canvas. Besides technological aspects, existing damages are investigated, and appropriate measures of conservation and restoration are conceptualized and carried out. The desire to keep the original stretching construction intact during treatment influences the approach to these measures. All treatments must be executable with the canvas mounted to the frame and must not pose any aesthetic impairments to the back of the canvas. |
