Abstract: | The following work deals with three silkscreens by Franz Erhard Walther, which were created as test prints in the process of creating the portfolio Werkfigur and today represent an independent work. The printed image is composed of superimposed layers of strictly geometric prints on a paper carrier, which differ in color, proportions, and arrangement. The prints, originally exhibited at the youth and Cultural guesthouse Koppelschleuse in Meppen, found their way to the HAWK workshops due to water damage and consequent microbial infestation. After the technological examinations, tests and considerations, as well as the conservational measures, a return to the exhibition location is intended. Lasting visible damages of the water damage and their consequences, like organic changes and discolorations, as well as damages from sufficient stabilizing and protecting mounting and framing, lead to the search for solutions in a presentation concept. This should consider conservation aspects, including the art historical context and the positions of stakeholders on conservation issues. The exhibition of the test prints in public space requires a special examination of surrounding influences in order to work out suitable methods. A preservation of the original frame, stabilizing possibilities of mounting, glazing and aesthetic measures of retouching will be discussed. |
