Abstract: | The Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen holds a relatively great number of leatherbound books that show white blooming on the surface. After first research and in view of past leather treatment actions, the suspicion arose that these could be crystallized fats, called spue or spew in the literature. In the context of this work, samples of the surface deposits were taken and examined by means of scientific methods in order to identify them and the attempt was made to trace them back to leather lubricants/dressings or certain components thereof. The blooming on the books consisted of free fatty acids, specifically palmitic and oleic acid. |
