Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This bachelor thesis compares the ethics in the conservation and restoration of objects of art in Germany and Portugal, focusing on selected case studies.
For this purpose, the historical developments in conservation and restoration in the two countries from the 19th century to the present are presented, highlighting contributions from art historians and conservators. In addition, the international context is considered. This is followed by the examination of the specific case studies, analysing the approaches and techniques employed in restoration, retouching, and, at times, reconstruction. Concluding with an evaluation, examining the extent to which theoretical guidelines and ethical principles are reflected in the applied practices and outcomes of the case studies.
