Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the painted back of a late Gothic retable shrine (c. 1480) from St Mauritius in Sella, today owned by the Tyrolean Provincial Museums. It is a painting on fir wood executed in egg-oil tempera. Within the framework of the present study, the object’s historical and cultural background is examined and a inventory and condition assessment, based on radiation diagnostics and scientific investigations, is carried out. The insights gained lead to the creation of a concept of measures for the conservation and restoration of the panel painting. The most serious damage consists in the loss of adhesion of the paint layer due to the effect of moisture, which poses the acute danger of further loss of original substance. Surface cleaning and consolidation of the fragile paint layer are carried out, and measures to improve the overall aesthetic impression of the panel painting are tested in sample areas.
