Overview:

Abstract: The privately owned tempera painting “In der Werkstätte” (1993) by Fritz Panzer shows severe
delamination. Large scales of the thick paint layer are detaching from the ground. The
delamination is connected to the formation of zinc soaps in the lower part of the underpainting,
as well as the low amount of binding medium in the paint. Based on scientific analyses, the
materials and the condition are examined and a concept for the conservation and restoration
is developed. The main attention is given to finding a method to conserve the sensitive matt
paint layer. The practical work focuses on the consolidation and returning the artwork to a
presentable condition.
