Abstract: | The ten banners of the museum Lauriacum will be presented to the public once again in an exhibition illustrating the history of the guilds in the oldest city in Austria at the castle Ennsegg. The objects suffer from severe aesthetic and structural impairments. An assessment of the material and the condition will serve for developing a concept for the conservation. These measures are to be carried out on two of the guild flag paintings, namely, the bakers’ and the masons’ flag. Scientific analyses will help to clarify the materials and the condition. The practical work focuses on closing the tears in the canvas support, which is painted on both sides. In order to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance, suitable for display, the surface of the paintings will be consolidated, cleaned and deformations flattened. The areas with paint loss will be integrated through filling and retouching. |
