Abstract: The classicist stucco ceiling of room 12.5.17, dated around 1800, is part of the former private rooms of the grand duke Carl August of Saxony-Weimar in the city castle Weimar. Ceilings and friezes are set in monochrome and are embellished with three-dimensional ornamentation in stucco, with metal appliqués, which are grouped around a central wall painting in the ceiling mirror. Within the framework of the Bachelor Thesis, a detailed inventory of the extant of the ceiling and a description of its condition are provided using maps, drawings, localization of the pattern of damage and the different materials used in the ceiling.Investigations with regard to material engineering, polychromy and metal applications are intended to provide information on the materials and binders used, as well as to allow an exact chronological classification. The focus lies on the analysis of pigments and binders and the exact determination of the layer sequence. Archival research on the history of use and development as well as on the repair and restoration history of the room and its equipment complement the picture. An exact description, localisation and analysis of the causes of the damage is intended to provide solutions for the conservation treatment. With regards to the currently only as an emergency measure secured cracks in the entire ceiling area, the work will in particular also deal with possibilities for the conservation and restoration treatment of this damage pattern. Thus, methodological considerations for the preservation and restoration of the ceiling can be used as a basis for a future action plan.
