Overview:

Abstract: This Bachelor thesis examines a painting called ´´Waldmoorlandschaft´´. The Canvas painting is from the storage facilities of the German Mining Museum in Bochum. The entire surface of the painting has been covered with a facing which due to its opacity prevents any analysis of the condition of the underlying paint film. The solidifying agent used for the facing is a wax resin mixture. It was decided to remove the Facing so that an analysis of the condition and damage to the paint can be made. The Cellulose material of the facings was removed by heat. The documentation and analysis of the paint film was carried out with the help of technological investigations, after the surface was cleared. At least three phases of previous restorations can be noted by the different patches used to bond the tears on the back of the canvas. The Conservative and restorative measures are aimed to integrate the previous restorations and create a uniform aesthetic of the paint layer and prevent further damage to the fragile canvas structure.Aim of the restoration and surcease into the condition of the Object was to determine weather a presentation of the Painting is possible and what steps need to be taken in order to securely place it in a Museum Exhibition.
