Overview:

Abstract: This Master-Thesis is concerned with a Baroque table from the collection of the Angermuseum Erfurt, an early piece made by the Berlin-based Stobwasser Manufaktur. The table is dated to the year 1776. With its folding tabletop and the hidden inner compartment it probably served as a handwork-work table. The table presents itself as a composite object, made from a combination of wood, metal and textile. The surface of the table is furnished with an elaborate set of several paint- and varnish-layers as well as with a metal overlay. Various figurative and decorative paintings are arranged on both sides of the table top, as well as on the table frame and table legs. In the course of this Master-Thesis, an assessment of the extant and the condition of the table is given, together with a cause-analysis of the damage. Theoretical restoration approaches lead to a conservation and restoration concept of measures, with the intention of preserving this handicraft object, of ensuring its survival and of regaining its formal continuity in order to capture the potential unity of the table´s design more easily.
