Abstract: The study of the Shellgrotto within the scope of this master thesis includes on one hand the first-time intense examination of the technological structural foundation. In this way the collection of already documented publications on the structure of the grotto can be amended by an essential piece. For example, upon close look at the passages it becomes clear that there once must have been integrated doors. Furthermore, there are traces of gilding to be found that do not appear in existing acquisitions of the portfolio. On the other hand while cataloging the portfolio, the damages are also cataloged and their origins are clarified. The severe exposure by sodium sulfate that caused the majority of damages can be confirmed. The partial catalog of damages and the choice of a modelaxis support the discussion for conservation and restoration. Finally, a concept will be proposed that distinctively builds on conservatory and less on restauratory measures. This is justified with the ethical standards set by Brandi.
