Overview:

Abstract: Paintings on rigid iron supports are a challenging topic in conservation science. The supports’ strong tendency to corrode makes it difficult to develop an appropriate preservation strategy. This diploma thesis deals with the issue in regard to four folk art paintings from Ladis, Tyrol. The focus is to evaluate a treatment strategy for the consolidation of paint endangered by corrosion. To verify the adhesion- and/or inhibition-properties of different materials, test series are performed on an object in a comparable condition; several approaches are discussed. The resulting findings are applied to the paintings from Ladis. Measures include consolidation of paint layers, surface cleaning and retouching.
