Michael Holzer: Damage from insect infestation – dealing with early restoration: The Spilman cello (late 16th century, Inv.No.104 KHM / SAM) back

Abstract: This thesis describes the research carried out to develop a treatment method for preserving a cello from the late 16th century, which shows German and Italian construction details.
The research focus is on darkened fillings with adhesion problems from a previous treatment after a wood borer infestation. Using GC/MS- and REM-analysis, a filler containing animal glue, linseed oil and earth pigment was identified. Damages and varnish material of historical importance were documented in a detailed mapping. Tests and research results led to a detailed conservation plan.
A representative damage area was selected to apply the developed treatment method. The surface was cleaned using a water based system at pH of 5.5 with Marlipal®. Fragile areas were consolidated with Paraloid B72. A multi-layered retouching was applied only to areas with loss of historical wood.
