Abstract: This Bachelor-Thesis covers the investigation and treatment plan of a figurally painted wooden drum. It reveals the art-historical and iconographic context of the painting as well as the original use of the instrument. As a result, the picture content was identified as one of the four major Chinese folk-histories.
Scientific examination yielded new results, according to which a different painting technique was used than previously assumed. The systematic examination of the materials and their specific damage was supported by scientific analyses, revealing the cause of damage.
A discussion had also been undertaken, whether the instrument is still usable in terms of its original purpose as a drum, taking into account the damages and their particular causes.
The acquired knowledge about the condition provided a basis for the preparation of a conservation and restoration plan. Climatic changes and environmental impacts were identified as the main cause of the damage.
The aim of the concept of measures is to transfer the object into a state, at which it could be exhibited.
With regards to the material composition, options for the introduction of preventive steps was developed.
