The relic casket KG 170 is one of the oldest exhibits of the collection of ecclesiastical objects at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. It was acquired by the Baron von Aufseß shortly after the museum was founded in the middle of the 19th century. The appearance of the house-shaped casket is characterised by its applications of a gilded tin-lead alloy which appears to cover the entire surface. The object is intended to be displayed again in the course of a re-creation of the permanent medieval exhibition, following a long-time storage at the museums depot. This Master-Thesis deals with the preparation of a concept for conservation and restoration of the relic casket, including preventive measures. In the course of the preparation, the casket underwent an extensive recording of its extant and condition in conjunction with art-technological investigations of the materials present. To evaluate the results, art historical aspects as well as the general history of the relic casket were considered. Whilst preparing the Master-Thesis, essential conservation measures were carried out.
