Overview:

Abstract: This Bachelor-Thesis documents the restoration of two items from a collection of preparatory drawings for fresco paintings (black chalk on cotton paper) made by the painter and illustrator Guiseppe Bartolomeo Chiari (1654-1727). The collection consists of altogether eighteen items and is owned by the Klassik-Stiftung Weimar.
The description of structure, condition and relation between the objects is followed by the presentation of a concept for active restoration. For this purpose, the individual steps of restoration, cleaning (wet /dry), de-acidification, consolidation, loss compensation and retouching will be discussed under various aspects in order to determine the appropriate procedure. This is followed by the documentation of the outcome of the applications. Finally, after a brief comparison of two methods of storage and mounting, considerations in matters of applicability of the chosen concept of restoration on the remaining items of the collection will be discussed.
