Abstract: | This Bachelor-Thesis is concerned with the book-cover collection housed in the Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) in Dresden – the former School of Arts and Crafts. Book-cover collections are expressive witnesses of their time, especially in respect of the emerging museum-culture in the second half of the 19th century. Most of the covers studied are still mounted in the way they were presented to the public at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Therefore, the covers as well as the mounts are of historic interest and, as a consequence, both aspects are covered in this study. For the present thesis, the entire stock of 114 book-covers was surveyed. Four of the covers were selected as examples, on which technical examinations were made to document the extent of the damage to the objects. A concept for the conservation and restoration was established based on these results. Several methods for dry cleaning were tested and evaluated. Finally, conditions for the public presentation of the objects were developed. |
