Abstract: The lidded tankard of ivory and silver, made by the Gutgesell Brothers of Hanau, is part of the collection of the “Germanisches Nationalmuseum” in Nuremberg. The object is not ready for display because its surfaces are covered by substances and some parts are at risk of falling off. This is why the concept of this thesis tries to find a solution to minimise the substances on the surface and to consolidate the loose parts in a way which is tailored to the needs of the object. This is done by starting with gentle cleaning methods, which where intensified as and when required, to ensure the preservation of the ivory and silver. The adhesives are reversible and aesthetically fitting, but easy to identify. On scrutiny, some harmless substances were found. It remained unclear whether these substances are originally there or whether they are a later addition.
