Overview:

Abstract: This Bachelor Thesis is concerned with the restoration of an 18th century painted and with stucco decorated ceiling. The ceiling links two rooms in the Ludwigsburg residential Palace in Baden Wurttemberg.
The main concern of this project is a transparent glossy coating on the paintings which was applied at a later date. This thesis will comprise recommendations to set up guidelines on how to deal with such coatings in future conservation and restoration work. To address this aim, a detailed survey was carried out and a description of the ceiling was prepared. Samples were taken and analysed with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and cross-section polishes were prepared. The properties of the paintings and of the coating were determined. Subsequently it was possible to start a series of tests with the intention of removing or thinning the coating. A Klucel-gel with isoropanol and distilled water was found to be adequate to thin the coating. Thereafter it was possible to formulate a plan of action.
