Overview:

Abstract: The present diploma thesis deals with the conservation and restoration of the painting „Old Man”
by Adolf Schlabitz, in possession of the State Museums in Berlin, Prussian Cultural Heritage. In the
Second World War as a war loss registered, the painting turned up again in 2008 in Ankara where it
had been held in the German embassy since 1934.
On its arrival in the Old National Gallery Berlin the painting was in a bad state. The most
remarkable damage was a wide damage of the support. Within the scope of the diploma thesis a
measure conception based on the examination of the damages was provided, as well as the
technological investigation to the consolidation of the damage of the paperboard support. With
the implementation of the necessary measures the painting was restored to a stable state, which
allows further measures.
