Abstract: | The splendid coffer of Kassel consists of a wooden body which is sumptuously decorated with gold leaf gilding, gilded silver foil and decoration elements made of amber, plastic Limoges enamel and enchased semiprecious stones. Furthermore some decor elements are coldly black painted. Within the scope of this thesis the splendid coffer was explored with regard to its complex material combination, the original mounting techniques and its state of preservation. A concept for further conservation steps was developed with special consideration of the cold painting. The central problems to be considered during the development of this concept and its realisation were handling the amber coatings, stabilisation of enamel and preservation of the cold painting. |
