Overview:

Abstract: Fragments of mural paintings from different periods of time are preserved in the Merseburg cathedral. This diploma thesis attends to an extraordinary image field on the northern wall of the southern choir screen: the Vera Icon depiction, a rare example of oil-based mural painting on stone. During the process, the condition, inventory and technique of the painting were examined and the capability of conservational treatment illustrated in order to restore this masterpiece. Based on comparative examples a periodical and art- cultural classification is presented.
