Abstract: "Form follows function" and "Every force evolves a form." Two sentences that could not be more different in
their origin. The former was a leitmotif of the modern era of the 20th century, the latter is a quote taken
from the American Shakers of the early 19th Century. The Shakers are known for their simple and
functional furniture and inspired many designers of the modern era. This thesis will deal with this issue and
find out how this "inspiration" affected their own designs.
