Christina Robens: Wrapping Katharina Fritsch’s indoor sculptures. Simulation, examination and prevention of a surface phenomenon on matt monochrome surfaces back

Abstract: The thesis deals with the fabrication of standardised and reproducible mock-ups imitating the surface morphology of spray painted indoor sculptures by the artist Katharina Fritsch with regards to their materiality and their visual appearance. Test series were developed to explore the currently practices packing method of wrapping the artist’s sculptures with commercial cling wrap. Pressure and friction tests were conducted in order to simulate the mechanical forces and load occurring during transport and handling. Tests were also conducted on combinations of packing materials currently in use. The changes in the surface morphology of the mock-ups before and after testing were captured using spectrometric methods.
The formation of the surface damages was localised and interpreted using a 3D digital microscope and analysed with a scanning electron microscope.
As a result of this study recommendations can be made for a safer method of handling and wrapping sculptures by Katharina Fritsch.
