Abstract: | 812 varnishes and 178 wood-staining recipes published by Nürnberg printers from 1670 to 1730 were evaluated: the most popular resin was sandarac followed by mystic the most frequently used coating was spirit varnish followed by oil varnish the most popular dyestuff used for staining was brazilwood the most frequently used stain was black followed by red. Besides these recipes, data was obtained by analysing a number of samples taken from furniture surfaces of this time and from reconstructed samples which are based on analysis of similar or matching recipes. The last part of this paper describes cases where the knowledge of old recipes helped to find the conservation concept. |
