Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This thesis addresses the topic of historical polychromy on exterior stone. In particular, the work centers on a 1511 lime-sandstone relief with the theme of Christs Prayer at the Mount of Olives. The relief is situated on the south facade of the parish church in Perchtoldsdorf and shows several polychrome phases. Besides dealing with the issue of the iconography, the history of the artwork and of the conservation treatment, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the paint layers. In addition to the macroscopic assessment, light and electron microscopy were used to identify different phases so they can be virtually reconstructed. Furthermore techniques and recipes from historical primary sources and secondary literature related to this issue are summarized and their actual application is examined and evaluated.
