Abstract: | Modern synthetic materials, whose ageing properties are unknown so far, find increasingly more use in conservation and restoration. These unknown ageing properties are the reason for testing whether contact angle measurements for the determination of the surface energy of solids are a valid method of analysis for aged materials. The main focus lies on the possible solubility changes of modern retouching materials. These materials are artificially aged before measurement. The basic theories behind polymeric materials, artificial ageing as well as the characterisation of surfaces by contact angle measurement serve as an introduction to the topic. A series of tests on 16 binding media used in the field of retouching is conducted and its findings evaluated with the help of other studies. A connection can be made between components of the surface energy of polymeric materials and the solubility parameters used in restoration. However, the sensitive and complex method of contact angle measurement is not suitable to be used as reasoning behind assertion for a change in solubility of binding media; rather it can be seen as a method of investigation supplementary to other methods of analysis. |
