Overview:

Abstract: The present thesis deals with the development of a conservation concept to stabilize damp and salt loaded plaster. The possibilities of preserving the original plaster are studied in the former Fort VI in Cologne. A comprehensive inventory and condition survey were done first. An analysis of the original building materials and of the processes of deterioration was conducted. Thereafter a climatic monitoring survey and an analysis of the salts were carried out. Subsequently, adequate conservation materials were developed on the basis of the first analysis and the current literature. The known recipes were reproduced and optimized and reference blocks were produced. The physical and mechanical properties were then analysed and compared to the original building materials. In conclusion, a model-area for testing the conservation materials in the object is presented and information about preventive conservation is given.
