The Marienkirche in Rostock has two medieval transept portals, covered with a dense coating. The state of preservation and condition of the covered material was unclear. The purpose of this thesis is to compile the recent researches und results of the surface coating and its detachment. Afterwards the condition and the state of preservation of the portals was documented and examined, by identifying the most seriously damaging processes and the physical properties of the stone, as the basis for a conservation project. For each portal conservation materials for consolidation, pointing, washes, fugues and injection is tested and the results are evaluated.
