Abstract: | In cooperation with Sylvia Bartmann and Anna Kromas: Concept of preservation for the ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ Simmershofen The objective of this work is the ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ in Simmershofen (north-western Bavaria, Germany) including the facade and the interior space, which shows design stages beginning from the 13th century time period on. Medieval painted stages in the nave exist in fragmentary condition. The choir exhibits in reduced condition the 1935 exposed mural painting from the first half of the 15th century. The essential damage phenomena in the chapel are a result from heavy moisture infiltration in combination with deliquescent salts, favoured by disregard from 1844 until the end of the 20th century. On the basis of the restorer examination from 2009 until 2010 a holistically concept of preservation with necessary arrangements for the chapel has been developed. Selected methods and materials were tested and evaluated on the basis of small probation-surfaces. This concept provides a basis for the intended care and preservation restoration. Self-contained by Karl Schweikert: Recommendations regarding the stabilisation of climate. The ‘Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle’ in Simmershofen, within the administrative district of ‘Neustadt an der Aisch’ (Germany), has not been in normal use since 1844. This former chapel of ease, which still contains remnants of mediaeval mural paintings, stands in the fields outside of the town. Through a lack of maintenance, the church is today in urgent need of conservation. Since 2009, students of the HAWK Hildesheim have been working on a comprehensive preservation concept. The implementation of which, and matched with renewed use by the parish, is planned for the coming years. In this context this thesis makes recommendations regarding the stabilisation of the indoor climate. The aim is, through appropriate measures, in the sense of preventative conservation, to secure an enduring preservation of the structure. |
