Overview:

Abstract: Starting from a practical example of glazed terracotta medaillons on a renaissance facade, the application of lasers in the cleaning of glazed terracotta should be proved in a systematic study of cleaning tests. Samples from terracotta were glazed with the colours white, yellow, green and blue. Afterwards, the plates were covered with layers of dispersion, acrylic and silicateb paint as well as cement. The absorption rate of materials gives evidence about the ablation and the selflimiting process in laser cleaning. For the determination of the absorption, reflectance measurements were made at the uncovered surfaces of terracotta and glazing and the coverings. With wavelengths of 355, 532 and 1064 nm, cleaning tests with different energy density were carried out to find out the ablation thresholds of the surfaces to be cleaned and the coverings. The threshold analysis proved, that the wavelength of 1064 nm brought out the best results. Afterwards, cleaning tests with a wavelength of 1064 nm were carried out at all samples. The cleaning tests were examined to potential damages through laser radiation with light microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and colour measurements.
