Abstract: | This master thesis deals with decorative stencilled paintings in the area of Lower Saxony, Germany. After the general introduction into the development of the painters craftsmanship, it contains the results from the examination of three painters estates between 1850 – 1950, with emphasis on the relevant aspects of the 19th and 20th Century. For this, exemplary painters were used. Adels, based in the city of Oldenburg was chosen for the urban aspect of work, his colleagues Stigrot and the painter family of Lüters, Köther, Meins for the rural background. Based on these findings from the lives and life works of the painters, the present treatment of decorative stencilled paintings in conservation is assessed. The results of this thesis give recommendations for the practical application of this subject matter. |
