Abstract: The examined casket comes from Lüneburg citizen church St. Johannis and is today presented as a medieval object in the cultural history exhibition of Museum Lüneburg. It is dated to the first half of the 15th century. The peculiarity of the casket
is its expressive iconographic program with coats of arms, drolleries and a depiction of the Christ’s crucifixion, as well as it’s polychrome surface, equipped with versatile decorative techniques such as material imitation and plastic applications.
As part of the investigation the cultural und art historical context is considered and, as the main emphasis, used materials und manufacturing technologies are analyzed. Based on the results, the previous dating is checked and a conservation
concept as well as recommendations for the further handling are formulated.
