Abstract: The work deals with twelve oceanic jewellery objects made of human hair from the South Seas collection of
the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne. It encloses two different main subjects, the
restoration/conservation and the ethical discussion. This contains the chemical and physical behaviour, the
ageing behaviour and appearing damages of human hair, as well as the practical and ethical handling of
these objects. Furthermore the cultur-al background, the history of the objects and new restoration
methods were described. Besides that studies of materials and their results as well as the right handling
with pesti-cide-loaded cultural goods are explained.
