Overview:

Abstract: The restoration of table/panel parquet floors is still a nearly blank sheet of paper. In this paper table/panel parquet floors of Castle Babelsberg´s celebration halls are described in detail. The structural and formal designs of these parquets give a close insight into the history of contemporary art of parquets. The typical kinds of damages, which the parquet in Babelsberg shows, are often presented in comparable parquets. The difficulties to re-glue the veneer are explained in detail. Therefore a unique spindle compression (press) system was developed, that is able to provide a much higher compression due to vacuum-technology. This device is also usable for comparable cases like veneer wall-panelling. Solutions like the considerate large surface remove of alcyd- resin varnish, for example, are suggested for further restoration-concepts.
