Overview:

Abstract: For this diploma thesis, a Venetian cabinet from the second half of the 16. Century with stone-inlay and lacquer painting of gold is introduced. Art historical analyses of the classification of the cabinet within first European lacquer works basing on numerous comparison-examples are followed by remarks on the utilisation and the placement of this piece of furniture. Then, examinations of the décor precede a description of the cabinet in terms of used materials, construction and manufacture-technique. Afterwards, an extensive documentation of the conservation status is followed by recommendations on preservation and restoration measures and suggestions for presenting the cabinet. The practical part of the thesis comprises the consolidation of the laquer painting and the exemplary cleaning and retouching of a part of the inside of the fall-front.
