Ute El Nahawi: Studies on the production of papyrus: Descriptions of external and microscopic characteristics and quality back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The first time in history Pliny the Elder (AD 23/24-79) described the manufacturing of papyrus in his Naturalis historia XIII, 68–83. He described it in the Classical Method from which in 1980 the Groningen Method resulted.
The present thesis deals with the manufacturing, supplementation and comparison of both methods and it defines manufacturing characteristics on the basis of work techniques and the used tool. In this connection, aspects of raw material, surface structures and further material properties are studied. These factors, besides environmental influences and mechanical stress, have an impact on the ageing and deterioration process. Starting point of this study are examinations of the plant and its anatomy.
In the practical part, papyri are manufactured in accordance with both methods and the results are compared. They deliver the basis for a final definition of quality, following the historical view of Pliny the Elder.
