Overview:

Abstract: The appereance of drying cracks, flaking paint and powdering paint are cause of a extensive investigation of the painting technique of the cycle Straßenbild (Street picture) 1979/ 80 from Georg Baselitz (Kunstmuseum Bonn).
The usage of a mixture of self prepared egg tempera and oil colour (probably „Viktoria Colora“ by the artis´s manufacture A. Schutzmann) could be identified. Painting no 13 shows significant damage of a very hard and brittle white paint layer. Here analysis reveals a high-grade saponification of the oil binding medium with zinc white. There are shown possibly explonatory models for the high rate of zinc sopas, brittleness and hardness of the paint layer.
Hence a consolidation concept for the matte layer of a powdering lower paint layer is developed.
