Abstract: The German word „Träger“ characterize materials which are mounted on the back of a map and should increase the durability and firmness of the map. Up to now there is no scientific work about backing materials used in Germany away over the centuries their qualities and effects.
Therefore, the purpose of this work was the development of a basis for the further exploration of this interesting field of paper restoration. The work give an overview about all used backing materials and their use time period. By examinations to maps it was closer possibly to characterize the used backing materials. Their qualities, their ageing resistance and their optical appearance were examined after restorical and ethical principles and were compared with each other. Furthermore some suggestions are offered for the removal as well as to the mounting of different backing materials.
