Hsiao-Hsuan Chao: A Painting of Egbert van der Poel on metallic Support. Concept of Consolidation for Paint Layers back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: For Paintings on metallic supports, flaking of the paint film often occurs. This has been also seen on the Dutch painting „Der Strand von Egmond ann Zee“ from Egbert Lievensz van der Poel, which was painted on tined iron plate and a collection of Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel. To solve this issue, a consolidation concept is developed.
This thesis contains an introduction on historical art technology of paintings with metallic support. In addition, the painting techniques for this object is investigated and the painting’s condition is also examined. Based on these results, a consolidation concept for the brittle and flaking paint films is then established. Various choices of consolidants and application methods are considered.
In the end of this thesis work, several tests are performed with Plexigum PQ611 to validate the consolidation concept. Further treatment and handling are also proposed.
