Overview:

Abstract: This thesis will provide the foundation for an animated scientific film that will be shown next year during the exhibition at the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar.
My thesis examines the technique used in the mechanical production of book covers, with emphasis on the weak areas caused by construction or use. These areas emerge due to the separate manufacturing of text block and cover during mechanical production.
To allow for a comparison, different types of handcrafted covers are described. From this small selection, one cover type is chosen to be the best suited for contrasting it with the publisher’s binding in the animated film.
