Abstract: Multiples by Joseph Beuys made of PVC softboard from the early seventies have been exhibiting
extraordinary plasticiser migration phenomena for a few years. The current thesis presents the results of three different strategies of active conservation: retrocative stabilisation, coating and dry cleaning. Thanks to the widow of Joseph Beuys the test series could be carried out on original material (unsigned rejects).
Prior analysis and tests had shown that the segregation processes are primarily due to hydrolysis of the plasticiser, which has been identified as being a polyester adipate.
The main test series was therefore focused on retroactive stabilisation by immersing the samples into solutions with acid scavengers, the diffusion and efficacy of which were assessed using different
analytical methods. The results showed that a minor stabilisation effect could be effectuated, but some
possibly negative impact due to the extraction of original plasticiser was also noticed.
As a result of a second test series it was found that (repeated) dry cleaning of the surface has no effect on the migration rate.
A surface coating with an acrylic two-component-laquer resultet furthermore in a considerable delay of the plasticiser migration by protecting the PVC surface from humidity.
